Chapter 8: One Crusade Ends, Another Begins
The end of the Third Crusade was incredibly anti-climactic for many who were involved with the war effort. Europe was not happy with the fact that Richard had led such a series of victories against the enemy only to decide to go home and likewise, those under Islamic Rule grew worried about Saladin’s failures and inabilities to fight against their enemy.
Richard’s failure to secure Jerusalem would end up leading directly to a call for another Crusade. Not more than a few years after the third Crusade came to its anti-climactic end, was there a call for another Crusade by Pope Innocent III. Innocent made the call for a Crusade as a way to organize his new reign, as he had recently just taken over the office of Pope. The English and French were dragged down in a war against one another, the Germanic forces were at odds with the papacy itself and the goal of Innocent was to organize the people back into Christian unification.
He issued out a papal bull, stating that the war must be brought against the Muslims, even attempting to use a tactic of claiming the Muslims had been mocking both the French and the English kings in the hopes of getting them to unify and move against the common enemy. Unlike other Bulls, this one gave specifications and was the most organized of all of the papal calls for a Crusade.
Unlike the other Crusades, the call was widely ignored at a first. Both the English and the French had little desire to engage in another crusade, preferring to fight against one another and without the assistance from European kings, garnering a force to fight would be much more difficult. Still, with the assistance of a preacher by the name of Fulk, a call was issued out to those participating at a tournament and enough forces were raised to begin the Fourth Crusade.
Leading this Crusade was an Italian count by the name of Boniface of Montferrat, who had replaced the original leader of the Crusade, Count Thibaut, who died before the crusade had a chance to begin. His strategy was very different from the previous Crusades, which had always involved organizing a large force and marching across Palestine to seize control of various targets. Rather, Boniface wanted to attack Egypt, the place where Muslim power had grown significantly over the years and in order to attack and invade the country, he would need to usage of transportation across the sea.
Seeking assistance from the city state of Venice, Boniface sent emissaries to secure transportation from the Venetian traders, hoping to build a fleet that would transport his Crusader forces to Egypt. The Venetians agreed to build enough of a fleet to transport the entire Crusade and thus they began preparing for a year. As the Venetians worked, the Crusader forces grew, primarily composed of Frenchman and those from the Holy Roman Empire.
Once the forces were prepared, they embarked to Venice to collect their warships and transportation.
